The Woods
The Woods is a series of small paintings exploring a strong memory from my childhood.
My grandparents lived in a large house with a wooded garden and paths all around the house. It was an Elizabethan Manor House. I would run around outside when it was getting dark, before my parents noticed I wasn't inside. I could see lights on in the house and knew adult conversations were going on inside. My granddad came home from hospital and died in the house at only 56. Understandable there was a lot of emotion and many intense conversations going on in the house that I was aware of and maybe wanted to avoid.
The paintings explore that feeling of wanting to be free and to be an explorer and avoid the world of adults as much as possible. The lights on in the house represent an ambivalent feeling of safety and warmth but potential danger. This implied danger reminds me of stories lile Hansel and Gretel.
